How to Set a Network as a Metered Connection on Windows 10 and 11

When setting up your dedicated Windows computer for solo staking, it is best to set your network as a metered connection. This can help prevent Windows from automatically downloading and installing updates, which results in a hard restart, corrupting blockchain data, or, in rare cases, leading to wallet corruption. This guide will show you how to enable the metered connection setting for both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections on Windows 10 and 11.

For Wi-Fi Connections

  1. Open Network Settings

    • Press Windows + I on your keyboard to open Settings.
    • Navigate to Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select Your Wi-Fi Network

    • Under Wi-Fi, click on the network name you're currently connected to.
  3. Enable Metered Connection

    • Scroll down to the Metered Connection section.
    • Toggle Set as metered connection to On.

For Ethernet Connections

  1. Open Network Settings

    • Press Windows + I on your keyboard to open Settings.

    • Navigate to Network & Internet > Ethernet.
  2. Select Your Ethernet Network

    • Click on the Ethernet network name you're currently connected to.
  3. Enable Metered Connection

    • Scroll down to the Metered Connection section.
    • Toggle Set as metered connection to On.

What If the Option Is Greyed Out?

If the Set as metered connection option is greyed out, it’s likely due to restrictions. This could be because of insufficient user permissions or administrative policies. You may need to run your computer as an administrator or seek additional guidance to resolve this.

Why Use a Metered Connection?

Setting a network as metered prevents automated updates while running Divi Desktop. However, this comes with responsibility: you must manually install updates regularly to maintain your system's security and stability.

Schedule Manual Updates

It’s essential to stay on top of updates to avoid leaving your computer vulnerable:
*Before applying an update and or restarting, make sure Divi Desktop is Closed(not running)

  1. Choose a Schedule That Works for You:
Decide how often you’ll check for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly updates.

    • Example: Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to check for updates every Tuesday evening.
  2. Manually Check for Updates:

    • Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
  3. Reboot After Updates:

    • Once updates are installed, reboot your computer to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Take Control of Your Crypto Computer

You are sovereign over your computer and responsible for treating it as a tool that supports your crypto journey. Setting a network as metered and managing updates manually is part of properly maintaining your staking machine. Nothing in crypto is truly passive—embrace the responsibility, set your schedule, and enjoy the rewards of your effort!
